The Izmit Turkey Earthquake, August 17, 1999

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Turkey on August 17, 1999. Unlike the quake which struck southern California two months later, this one occurred in a heavily populated area, and caused substantial loss of life and property damage.

The quake occurred on one of the world's best studied faults, the North Anatolian which bears a strong resemblence to the San Andreas fault in California.
