The Izmit Turkey Earthquake, August 17, 1999A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Turkey on August 17, 1999. Unlike the quake which struck southern California two months later, this one occurred in a heavily populated area, and caused substantial loss of life and property damage.The quake occurred on one of the world's best studied faults, the North Anatolian which bears a strong resemblence to the San Andreas fault in California.
