Problem Solving Skills Software -- The Big Picture

What educational value do "problem solving skills" programs have? This category has perhaps the oldest roots of any educational software subject. Early programs were text-based, and challenged the user to mentally keep track of where various objects or clues were hidden for future retrieval and use. Modern-day programs, like those reviewed here, have added impressive graphics, animation, and sound -- but the objective remains the same, sometimes combined with additional critical thinking activities.

• Thinkin’ Things Sky Island Mysteries [for ages 8 to 12] from Edmark, focuses on logic, communication, multi-tasking, prioritization and other thinking skills. Stretches students to the limit in an entertaining and highly rewarding fashion. Varying amounts of supervision may be required for younger or struggling students.
• Freddi Fish 3: Case of the Stolen Conch Shell [for ages 3 to 8] from Humongous Entertainment, provides an impressively animated and challenging program. Younger users required more help, but enjoyed more repeat use.
• Pajama Sam 2 - Thunder and Lightening aren't so Frightening [for ages 3 to 8] from Humongous Entertainment, provides another beautifully animated, challenging program. Good choice for parent-child activity with younger kids, or for older ones with good attention to detail.
