Problem Solving Skills Software -- The Big Picture

What do we mean by "problem solving skills" software? These are programs that focus on developing or exercising critical thinking skills by the user, rather than a specific academic discipline.

• I Spy [for ages 5 to 9] from Scholastic, consists of eight "find the objects" activities based on the theme originated in the "I Spy" series of books. Best for kids who like doing puzzles and search games.

• Rugrats Movie Activity Challenge [for ages 6 to 12] from Broderbund, provides six arcade-like games requiring some problem solving skill and plenty of hand/eye dexterity. Best for arcade-loving, Rugrats fans.

• Rocky & Bullwinkle's Know-it-All Quiz Game [for ages 9 to 12] from Houghton Mifflin Interactive, provides a fun way to show off your knowledge and deductive reasoning skills. Categories range from science to literature, to current events. Fun for small groups, too.

• Hoyle Classic Board Games [for 7 to adult] from Sierra, provides computerized versions of 10 classic games, ranging from Battleship to Chess. Although the educational value has been lost in the process for some games, the program provides an ever-ready opponent.
