What Smart Kids Know About Endangered Species is an educational program for young children that introduces the causes of animal endangerment. It teaches the threats that humans create for animals ranging from the danger caused by an escaped balloon to deforestation. The program is set up as an interactive book. The player can turn the page by clicking the left mouse button. Each page has a short rhyme that explains a hazard to animals caused by humans. Some of the words in the rhymes may be challenging for young children so an animated voice reads each page aloud. Caveat to parents: while this voice may be captivating to a child, it can become slightly annoying to anyone else in the room after several pages of the interactive book. Along with the rhyme on each page, there are interactive activities including coloring, connecting the dots, mini crosswords, and simple word jumbles. There is no winning or losing in this game, only learning.
What Smart Kids Know About Endangered Species teaches kids specific causes of animal species becoming endangered. Not only does it discuss mega-factors damaging animal populations such as pollution, it also highlights some of the little things that even kids can do to protect animals such as cutting six-pack rings to keep animals from getting entangled and choked. The game motivates kids to help all animals by showing them how they can do their part, not just how adults should do things differently.
What Smart Kids Know About Endangered Species is most appropriate for children ages 4-7. Younger kids will require assistance and may be unable to understand the lessons taught through the rhymes. For kids older than 7, the information is most likely something they have already learned. Most kids in the 4-7 age range can find something they enjoy in this game: the facts, the art projects, or the word puzzles. The interactive book is quite fun and allows the player to be creative while learning.
What Smart Kids Know About Endangered Species self-installs; simply put in the CD, and its ready to go. Simple instructions are presented at the opening of the game right after the CD is loaded. The activities are quite simple as well. The controls for connecting the dots and coloring appear much like those in the simple Paint application on most computers: a button for paintbrush, one for a pencil, and one for drawing lines. After selecting an art tool, just click on one of the many color swatches and begin! An adult may need to help explain the game and point out how to control it initially, but kids should be able to catch on quickly.
What Smart Kids Know About Endangered Species is a great educational tool for creative kids who want to make a difference.
